September is National Suicide Awareness Month, and we are pleased to announce that “Entendiendo la Depresion: La Conexion Suicidio” (Understanding Depression: the Suicide Connection) will be broadcast in Minnesota, North Dakota and western Wisconsin on public television, via TPT 2.2, the MN Channel.
The five part series (and its predecessor, “Understanding Depression, Hope Through Treatment”) has aired extensively in English earlier, but because of some of the special challenges Latinos feel, the second series has been translated into Spanish, also. Co-producer, James Jordan, MD, states that “By learning more about depression’s signs and symptoms, stigma can be reduced and help can be sought before despair and risk of suicide ensues.”
See below for details regarding the program topics, and guests and information on accessing TPT 2.2.
September 4 — PART I – Intro – Co-hosts, James Jordan, MD, and Mary Hanson, LISW, talk with Mark Meier, LICSW, who almost took his life and therapist, Anne Gearity, LICSW.
September 11 — PART II – The Family and Suicide – Linda Schaeffer, Anna Lundblad and Kim Witczak share their stories about losing a family member due to suicide.
September 18 — PART III — Policy Leaders on Suicide – Edward Ehlinger, MD, MN Commissioner of Health, and Macaran Baird, MD, Head, U of MN Family Medicine, discuss the dramatic increase in suicide, the need for better screening as well as collaborative treatment, and the need to de-stigmatize mental illness.
September 25 — PART IV – Turning Away from Suicide, Choosing Life — Mark Meier, LICSW, talks more in depth about his story and his foundation, the Face It Foundation.
October 2 — PART V – The Effect on Families – Further and more in-depth conversation is held with Linda Schaeffer, Anna Lundblad and Kim Witczak about surviving a loved one’s suicide and what they are doing to honor their loved ones.
